It is with profound pleasure that we announce the gift of a collection of poems by Pablo Neruda to the DC Poet Laureate, Dolores Kendrick. This gift is made possible through the generosity of the Cultural Center of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Felix Angel, director, and Solidad Guerra, assistant general coordinator.
The poems were recited by the Nobel Prize-winning Chilean poet Pablo Neruda (1904-1973) on June 18, 1966 at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC at an event sponsored by President Felipe Herrera of the Inter-American Development Bank. The IDB Cultural Center
rediscovered* this recording in 2004 and played it, accompanied with videos of Neruda's homes, on June 6, 2006 for an audience of 400, almost 40 years to the date after the first recital. The following are Neruda's poems in Spanish and in his own voice.
Select any link below to hear portions of the recital from the June 18, 1966 recital at the Mayflower. The poem titles are first in English then in Spanish. Download the
written translations* of the poems in English by various writers to follow along.
Special thanks to the Neruda Foundation in Chile.
