Young resident writers ages 8 through 18 are invited to submit works in three literary genres to the Larry Neal Writers' Competition. Entries will be judged by a panel of professional writers. Contestants should submit in their age categories: Young Writers (ages 8-12) & Teen Writers (ages 13-18).

The deadline for submitting works to the youth category is Thursday, March 20, 2008 at 6pm.

Download the Larry Neal application for Youth and Teen writers.*

Applicants may apply in one category only and must submit six copies of the following:

  • Poetry: two poems (one poem per page)
  • Fiction: one short story, not to exceed 500 words
  • Essay: one short essay, not to exceed 500 words

The Commission reserves the right to place unmarked work in the appropriate category as deemed necessary. Applicants must be residents of the District of Columbia. Judges reserve the right not to make an award in any category in which they do not find suitable submissions.
