Larry Neal Writers' Awards Competition for Adults

Resident writers of the District of Columbia are invited to submit works in three categories of literature to the Larry Neal Writers' Competition. Cash prizes will be awarded for artistic excellence in writing in each category and presented at the 25th Larry Neal Writers' Awards Ceremony.

The deadline for submitting works to the adult category is Thursday, March 20, 2008 at 6pm.

Download the Larry Neal Application form for Adult writers.*

Applicants submit, in one category only, six copies of the following:

  • Poetry: three (3) unpublished poems (one poem per page)
  • Fiction: one (1) unpublished short story excerpt, not to exceed 3,000 words
  • Dramatic Writing: one (1) unproduced play or screenplay with a two-page summary

The Larry Neal Writers' Competition are judged using a "blind" format—judges do not know the identity of the authors. Submissions are judged according to their artistic merit by distinguished professionals in the three literary genres. The judges reserve the right not to make an award in any category in which they do not find suitable submissions.

If you wish to have an application sent to you in HTML format, email Lisa Richards.

The Larry Neal Writers' Competition is sponsored by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities and funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
