DC Creates Public Art
The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities' DC Creates Public Art Program purchases, commissions, and installs artwork for public sites throughout the District of Columbia. The program was established by 1986 legislation that allocates up to one percent of the District's adjusted Capital Budget for the commission and acquisition of artwork.
DC Creates Public Art programs include:
- Art Bank: The Art Bank is the city's movable collection of works purchased from local artists. Works in the collection are owned by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities and loaned to other District Government agencies for display in public areas.
- Community Art Initiatives: Commissions artists to create permanent public art works at neighborhood sites that have been nominated by District residents. The goal of the program is to involve community members in bringing quality public art projects to their neighborhoods while creating opportunities for local artists.
- Art in the Metro: In partnership with the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority, the Arts Commission supports the creation and installation of artwork throughout the Metrorail system.
